1937: The Chinese city of Nanking, is under siege by the Japanese. Locally, the British reporter George Hogg, who is to associate with the guerrilla fighters Jack Chen and nurse Lee Pearson. Together, they allow sixty orphans to escape from the city. It awaits them difficult journey along the Silk Road, and thousands of miles over rough terrain, through deserts and glaciers.
